Just noticed you added me to your blogroll, so thanks. The French 75 is a recent addition to my repetoir. I go with 3/4 oz gin, 1/2 oz lemon juice, 1/2 oz simple syrup, and top it with champagne in a flute.

Wow! I love the French 75. If I am just drinking champagne I can go through a few bottles in a night (with help) which gets pricey so I like the addition of the gin and lemon- it creates a light, crisp cocktail. However, when using Tanqueray gin (94.6 proof) or even worse, 2 oz. of Tanqueray, beware! Since it’s a yummy champagne drink I guzzle and the gin really sneaks up on me. So I agree, use 1oz gin.

I like the champagne cocktail as well. That is my drink when ‘I am not drinking’.

I like drinking champagne for lots of reasons, but one is definitely that any leftovers and be temporarily capped and in the next day or two give ample excuse for making French 75s. I think they are fun and the only other gin drink I consume with any real regularity besides, of course, Pegus!

Why don't you try it again with about half that much gin and lemon juice? Or even a little less than that. Champagne is great stuff, but I can't see it holding its own against that much gin. I treat the additives as there for accent, not main event. Also, this can get it into a flute. A whole collins glass-sized serving of French 75 sounds like a recipe for an evening ender! That or a drink that gets warm... I'm not sure which is the greater tragedy.

At any rate, I never heard about the field artillery piece as being the inspiration for this one. That is cool. But it might explain the 2 ozs, of Gin part....
