The Comparison Table
Your selected kit will appear in the first comparison column position. If you visited this page directly then the current top rated kit on the site will appear in lieu of a user selected kit to compare. In the following 5 columns, the top rated starter kits in the same budget range will appear in order of our readers’ review scores from left to right. The name of each brand can be found at the top of each column. The furthest left column in each row has a title to show which information should follow in its adjacent row cells. A brief description will appear when you move your mouse cursor over each row title. A full guide and description of an individual row’s information can be obtained by clicking the title, which links to the relevant section in this guide.

E-cig Type: This shows the type of e-cigs included in a certain kit. The row will show two e-cigarette build types:
- Cartomizer: This is the currently popular 2-piece design electronic cigarette that the majority of brands will offer. The e-cig’s two separate pieces are the battery, the section that occupies where the tobacco and rolling paper would be found on a traditional cigarette, and the cartomizer, which replaces the traditional filter. In cartomizers the cartridge, which holds the liquid nicotine, has a built-in atomizer (hence the portmanteau ‘cartomizer’!). The atomizer is the heating element which vaporizes the liquid nicotine into water vapor for you to inhale while using the e-cigarette. This process is of course all powered by the aforementioned battery.
- 3 Piece design: In this design the cartridge and atomizer are separate pieces. This was the type of model favored in the early days of e-cigarettes. Although some claim that a dedicated atomizer performs better than a disposable element found in Cartomizers, they will also need to be cleaned and replaced regularly too. If they aren’t, this often leads to a poor and inconsistent performance from your e-cig. When reaching the end of its life, your smoking experience will deteriorate quickly.
Individual single cartridges have an advantage that they can be self-refilled if you chose to buy liquid nicotine or e-liquid. However this can be a messy, laborious process and liquid nicotine can be dangerous in large quantities. Also because single cartridge units are often not sealed, accidental over filling and poor quality units will cause undesirable leaks. Cotton webbing is usually used inside a cartridge to help draw out the liquid will need to be replaced along with the cartridge shells themselves over time. This again leaves your unit open to consistency issues not experienced with cartomizers.
Switch Types: These are the battery switch types available with or without as an option in a certain kits. The switch in an electronic cigarette battery is the device that tells the atomizer to start vaporizing the liquid nicotine from the cartridge so it is ready to be inhaled. Auto switches operate when a user sucks/draws on the end of the unit like a normal cigarette. >
A Manual switch operates by a small button depressed on the bottom half of the battery. Manual switch batteries are not as common as they used to be. Early auto switches suffered with a slight lag and also with over-sensitivity issues, which often resulted in the unit turning on and off in a user’s pocket or bag. Modern automatic switch batteries no longer suffer with these issues and are now the most common e-cig switch type available. Some more experienced Vapers prefer manual switches as it allows them to draw as much vapor as they want since there is no cut-off safety feature like you would get with the automatic batteries. We do recommend that new users stick to the automatic switch batteries because they will turn off the battery when the maximum recommend amount of nicotine is dispensed for each puff. Most users will never notice the cut off because they won’t reach that point, but if you are a heavy smoker, the manual battery may be a better fit for you. Many new manual switch batteries are also coming with a lock feature (Usually pushing the button 3 times fast to turn it on and off) to prevent it from turning on when not intended to the consumer.
Batteries Sizes: These are the battery sizes available or included with a kit. We’ve categorized them into 4 different sizes for the purposes of the comparison table, based on the size they will make an e-cigarette when a cartridge is attached:
- Standard: Comparable to the size of a normal king size tobacco cigarette.
- Mini: Smaller than a standard sized cigarette.
- Long: Long version but still comparable to 100s sized cigarette.
- Vaporizer: Too large to be compared to a normal cigarette. This category covers a wide range of devices including the tank devices you’ll see from more specialized e-cigarette suppliers.
Battery size is often a compromise between weight and convenience. Larger devices will tend to be longer lasting between recharges; however will often be heavier, which can make the e-smoking experience less natural.
Battery Colors: Common colors of the batteries available in the kit. The patterns icon flags that a range of different pattern styles may be available.
Batteries In Kit: Number of battery units included in the kit. At least 2 are recommended to prevent your e-cigarette from being out of action while one of your battery charges.
Cartridges In Kit: Number of cartridges or cartomizers included in the kit.
Wall Charger: Indicates if a unit which allows you to recharge through a wall socket is included. Note that some e-cigarettes require that the USB charger is attached to the wall charger unit to connect a battery. Wall chargers that are dependent on a USB charger to connect a battery are never actually sold without the required USB cable.
USB Charger: Indicates if a unit which allows you to charge from a USB port (like on a pc or laptop) is included. Note that some wall chargers require a USB charger to connect a battery to the wall device. This means that the units can’t always be used as 2 separate charger units at the same time.
Car Charger: Indicates whether a unit comes with a charger that allows your battery to be recharged from a 12V in-car power connection on the move.
PCC (Personal Charging Case): These are cases which, once charged themselves, allow you to charge your batteries on the move. They often allow you to carry several cartridges and spare batteries at the same time too. Often shaped like a traditional cigarette pack, they offer you LED charge indicators on the pack so you know how much battery is left in your pack and when your battery is fully charged again.
Case: Indicates if a standard wallet or case is included to hold your e-cigarette and spares on the go.
Pass Through: These devices are batteries that have a wire connection to a USB port. This means they are constantly powered but are tied to the power source, so they are not mobile and don’t hold any power charge. They are ideal for those who spend long periods working at/near a computer and don’t want to waste the charge of their normal batteries. In some cases, you can use these with a car charger and you will never be without a charged battery while driving!
Cartridge Strengths: For the purpose of the comparison table we have tried to group all the different brands’ varying cartridges and strengths into nicotine strength groups.
- 0mg = No Nicotine
- 6mg = Ultra-Light
- 12mg = Smooth
- 18mg = Full
- 24mg = Strong
- 36mg = Ultra strong
No. Cart Flavors: Number of different cartridge flavors an electronic cigarette brand offers. These are not necessarily available to be bundled with your starter kit, but are certainly available for purchase as refills. Note this figure may vary with the number of ‘common’ cartridge flavors available below. For full details continue reading.
Common Cartridge Flavors Available: We put together a survey of the 15 most commonly available cartridge flavors of every e-cigarette brand we have reviewed so far. Please note that this is for comparison purposes only. Some e-cigs brands have their own range of flavors that can’t be easily categorized into these 15 types. You may find more available when actually visiting an e-cigarette supplier’s website. V2 Cigs even allows consumers to create their own flavor cartridges if they are willing to buy a certain quantity of that flavor.
– Flavors Compared: American Tobacco, Traditional Tobacco, Smooth Tobacco, Turkish Tobacco, Menthol, Peppermint, Cherry, Chocolate, Coffee, Pineapple, Vanilla, Strawberry, Peach, Apple and Cinnamon.

Note that these prices are to offer a comparison between brands and much greater individual savings are often available in larger quantities, such as 10, 15 or even 25 packs.
Warranty: The warranty available on electronic products like batteries and chargers. Be sure to read the small print to ensure that you remain covered. Lifetime warranties often require that you have made a direct purchase from the company (like cartridges) within a reasonable time period.

Katie actually had a negative first experience of electronic cigarettes, picking up a cheap and horrible model from my local mall. Thanks to a chance meeting with co-editor David, she hasn’t had a tobacco cigarette in over 5 years. She brings a strong female voice to the e-cig community.
