Researchers worked with fifteen tobacco smokers and fifteen nonsmokers. The smoker group was comprised of both men and women and all of the participants smoked a minimum of fifteen cigarettes each day. The nonsmoker group was comprised of men and women who had never smoked.

The fifteen smokers were studied after smoking a tobacco cigarette of their choice. Then they were studied after vaping with an electronic cigarette. The fifteen nonsmokers were studied after inhaling second-hand cigarette smoke and then after inhaling electronic cigarette vapor. Both groups underwent tests to determine their serum and cotinine levels. Researchers also measured their lung function, nitric oxide levels, and exhaled carbon monoxide.

The research team noted cotinine levels were similar between both tobacco smokers and e-cig users. The cotinine levels are representative of exposure to nicotine. The similar outcome on cotinine levels reveals the e-cigs offer the same nicotine exposure as regular cigarettes. While the results were similar on this test, that was the only truly similar result.

Lung function was extremely different after exposure to tobacco cigarettes vs. e-cig exposure. When participants used electronic cigarettes or were exposed to e-cig vapor, it did not have cause any significant change to lung function. Tobacco cigarettes caused a major decline in lung function.

Exposure to second-hand cigarette smoke was more damaging to participants’ lung function than using electronic cigarettes. This study is important for putting to rest rumors that electronic cigarettes are harmful to people with breathing problems.

Previous studies have also shown similar results, with electronic cigarettes causing no impairment of lung function. Tobacco cigarettes are known to cause significant harm to lungs, leading to major breathing problems and lung disease or even cancer. According to the Lung Association of Canada, a smoker’s carbon dioxide levels will begin to decline within days of giving up cigarettes.

Studies like this are vital to improve the reputation of electronic cigarettes. While many people do not understand the differences between tobacco cigarettes and e-cigs, there is really no comparing the two. E-cigs seem to offer smokers an alternative way to enjoy nicotine and the act of smoking without sustaining acute lung damage in the process.

Do you feel e-cigs have improved your lung function?

The tobacco industry is currently worth more than $35 billion per year. While it is a booming industry with millions of smokers worldwide, it is also one of the most dangerous industries to public health. Cigarettes pose serious health risks, killing 50 percent of users and causing 430,000 Americans to die each year from smoking-related diseases. Many people wrongly assume the nicotine is a cigarette’s most deadly carcinogen, but this is a myth. Instead, more than 7,000 chemicals are in a tobacco cigarette and these are the cause of smoking-related death and disease.

Electronic cigarettes eliminate all of the chemicals and provide an alternative nicotine delivery system. Instead of pushing for strict regulation of e-cigs and working against the electronic cigarette industry, the FDA would do well to embrace them as a good alternative to cancer-causing tobacco cigarettes. Rather than investing so much time and money into pushing for nicotine abstinence, it would be wise to encourage safer methods of nicotine delivery.

President Obama signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act in 2009, giving the FDA authority to closely regulate tobacco products. The FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products now regulates the manufacturing, labeling, and marketing methods of all United States tobacco products. However, they do not currently have the authority to regulate electronic cigarettes.

Currently, the FDA is working towards a new “deeming rule”, which would place new regulations on nicotine-delivery devices like e-cigarettes. The results could be disastrous for e-cigarette companies and users. The FDA could eventually have authority to regulate and supervise all e-cig production, marketing, and distribution in the same way tobacco cigarettes are regulated.

The FDA has not yet released information on what kinds of regulations they intend to apply to e-cigs. However, a letter written to stakeholders does give us some clues.

“Chapter IX also subjects “new tobacco products” (i.e., products that are first marketed or modified after February 15, 2007) and “modified risk tobacco products” (i.e., products that are “sold or distributed for use to reduce harm or the risk of tobacco-related disease associated with commercially marketed tobacco products”) to pre-market review.”

Based on this statement, any e-cig products that was developed and sold after 2007 could potentially be banned until approved as safe by the FDA. If this would happen, the best-case scenario would be that e-cig companies could prove newer products as “substantially equivalent” to one of the products sold before 2007. However, e-cig technology has rapidly changed and new innovations have appeared constantly since 2007, making the likelihood for the FDA to accept newer e-cigs highly unlikely.

If this did occur, electronic cigarette users would no longer have access to hundreds of their favorite products. They would be forced to use only e-cigs that were available before 2007. This would inevitably cause many companies to go out of business due to the long process of FDA research and regulation.

Even without strict e-cig bans, the FDA could subject e-cig companies to extensive paperwork, manufacturing requirements, and user fees. This would lead to the demise of small e-cig companies and would only be sustainable by the largest corporations.

Ultimately, e-cig fans will just have to wait and see what develops with the FDA’s new “deeming rule”. The FDA has a tremendous opportunity to embrace nicotine-delivery products as a healthier choice than tobacco cigarettes, potentially saving thousands of lives each year.

However, they could also enact regulations against e-cigs that would make them unavailable and harder to access, leading many to turn back to tobacco cigarettes. This would lead to an unparalleled disaster for American public health. We will continue to watch this situation as it develops. One out of five pregnant women in England continue to smoke, despite the dangerous health risks to unborn babies. Smoking during pregnancy can lead to premature birth, low birth weight, and delayed development. When a pregnant woman smokes, she reduces the amount of oxygen available to the unborn child and causes a spike in the baby’s heart rate. Studies show that smoking during pregnancy increases the risk for miscarriage and stillbirth.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has suggested the smoking tests so that midwives can better monitor the health of women and their babies. When a woman tests for high carbon monoxide levels, she would then be referred to smoking cessation services.

The goal of the smoking test is to help expectant women get help to stop smoking. It would be an extra step in educating women about the risks and providing them with the support they need to give up cigarettes during pregnancy.

While this sounds like a great option for pregnant mothers, there are many who oppose the smoking test. One of the biggest concerns is that the test could be mandatory and women would be subjected to awkward conversations with their midwives. In many situations, this could cause an expectant mother to feel shame and embarrassment.

There is already a great deal of pressure on pregnant women to avoid smoking. A mandatory smoking test could have a negative effect by causing women who smoke to avoid prenatal care for fear of being shamed or put on the spot.

Currently, no NHS treatment is mandatory and midwives do not require any kind of smoking test at prenatal appointments. Cathy Warwick serves as the Royal College of Midwives’ Chief Executives. She told The Telegraph that the tests were “helpful” but would only be a partial solution because not all women would be willing to take the test.

Warwick also expressed the need for women to have a choice about the test. She said, “Any test which becomes routine must be offered along with comprehensive information and women must be able to opt out.”

NICE will release the official guidelines later this summer. Do you think it should be mandatory for all pregnant women to take smoking tests? Would it be beneficial to protect babies from premature birth or would it only cause more women to avoid prenatal care?

With major tobacco companies now developing and marketing their own electronic cigarettes, it raises several questions. Will the new e-cigs drive innovation in electronic smoking or just use their muscle to crush the small innovators in the e-cig industry? Will people accept the new e-cigs marketed through Big Tobacco companies or will they shun them due to their former reputation?

All five big name US tobacco companies are jumping on the e-cig bandwagon. Let’s take a brief look at each of these companies and how they are introducing e-cigs into their product lines.

Altria Group

Altria is the largest cigarette manufacturer in the United States. Based in Richmond, Virginia, Altria produces a variety of popular cigarette brands including Marlboro, L&M, Parliament, and Virginia Slims. Altria recently announced plans to introduce their own e-cig brand later in 2013. While many are waiting with eager anticipation to see the new e-cig Altria will unveil, this company is actually playing catch-up with their competitors who are already embracing the e-cig market.

British American Tobacco

British American Tobacco is another popular cigarette manufacturer, credited with distributing Lucky Strike and Pall Mall cigarettes. In December 2012, British American announced that they had acquired CN Creative Limited, a start-up based in the United Kingdom that specializes in electronic cigarette research and development. With the acquisition, they also took over Intellicig, the e-cig brand sold in more than 26 countries through over 5000 retailers.

Imperial Tobacco

Imperial Tobacco is another leader in the Big Tobacco industry. With brands like Embassy, Lambert, Butler, and Davidoff, Imperial dominates the cigarette industry in many African countries. On May 1, 2013, Imperial announced their intention to expand their company to include electronic cigarettes. They are open to both development of new e-cig products or acquiring existing brands.

Lorillard Inc.

Lorillard is the third largest tobacco company in the United States. Based in Greensboro, North Carolina, Lorillard is responsible for making Newport, Kent, and Maverick cigarettes. In April 2012, Lorillard moved into the e-cig industry by acquiring Blu eCigs for $135 million. This decision proved to be lucrative right away. During the first year under Lorillard management, Blu eCigs expanded to sales in more than 50,000 retail stores. The result was an immediate jump in profits, with Blu eCigs contributing $61 million to Lorillard’s overall net sales for the year.

Reynolds American

Reynolds American is the second largest cigarette maker in the United States. Based in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Reynolds American produces Pall Mall and Camel cigarettes. This company recently decided to expand and include a line of electronic cigarettes. As a first step, Reynolds has created the Vuse e-cig, which is now available in limited distribution in North Carolina and Virginia. Vuse e-cigs are expected to be available throughout the United States soon.

So these big five are obviously embracing electronic cigarettes as a way to continue generating sales in the face of declining tobacco use. While many people are choosing to give up smoking, e-cig use is increasing with each year. The future could be bright for e-cig users as more companies move to develop cutting edge technology to serve as an alternative to tobacco cigarettes, even if it comes from an old enemy.

Senator Link previously sponsored the Smoke-Free Illinois Act in 2008 that banned smoking in restaurants and bars. With the new bill, smoking bans would be enforced at all Illinois public colleges no later than July 1, 2014. Currently, there are only three other states (Arkansas, Iowa, and Kansas) that have bans on smoking on college campuses. Many Illinois colleges have already banned smoking, with the most recent being the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne.

Some raised questions as to whether this bill is really necessary. Senator Dale Righter brought forward several concerns about the proposal, saying “The places this would ban smoking at, those places are governed by a board of trustees that can make decisions like this for themselves.”

Senator Link disagreed, expressing his desire to see the state take the lead. He said, “When we did Smoke-Free Illinois, a lot of people were asking us to do a statewide standard and that’s what we’re doing here so it’s not a patchwork. This way, all state colleges and universities will have the same standard.”

Others expressed concern that the bill would be difficult to enforce. If students are caught smoking on campus, a simple warning would not be sufficient to prevent them from smoking again. So how could a large scale ban on smoking at all Illinois colleges be a realistic action plan to reduce smoking in young people?

There are already 1,129 college campuses that are smoke free, according to Kathy Drea, vice president of the American Lung Association in Illinois. Drea spoke out in support of the new bill, urging senators to stand behind the smoking ban that could protect thousands of students from the dangers of second hand smoke.

According to the American College Health Association, 83 percent of college students report that they do not smoke or have not smoked in the last 30 days. It seems that the way society views smoking is changing and while it was once a normal cultural thing to enjoy a cigarette between classes, today’s students see smoking as taboo.

Only time will tell whether this new bill becomes law, but the decision will ultimately lie with the members of the House. If it does pass, all college campuses in Illinois will have a new smoking ban in place by next summer.

For the vapor test, researchers chose an eGO e-cig battery and a 510T atomizer. To amplify results, they also tried vaping using a Lavatube device at 4.7 volts using the same atomizer. During the study, 15 e-liquids will be tested and 4 of them will undergo dual testing with both regular and high voltage. Using a flask of myocardial cell medium, vapor is drawn in by a vacuum pump that creates negative pressure on the atomizer tip.

The researchers are simulating a 4 second puff with one minute in between puffs. A total of 200mg of e-liquid is evaporated to accomplish a one percent concentration of the vapor into the myocardial cells. For the cigarette test, smoke was extracted from three cigarettes using the ISO method. The cellular medium was allowed to remain with the extract from e-cig vapor and cigarette smoke for 24 hours; then the cells were compared with a clear cell medium to look for changes.

While the study is not yet complete, there are already some visible results. In the culture with cigarette smoke, the cellular viability was only 3.9 percent after 24 hours. However, the culture with e-cig vapor had a viability of 100 percent. This is a major difference, showing that e-cig vapor does not have the same damaging effect on heart cells that is associated with cigarette smoke.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death associated with smoking. According to Science Daily, 40% of deaths related to smoking come from coronary disease. By studying the impact of electronic cigarette vapor on cultures of heart cells, this study is highlighting the positive health implications of choosing e-cigarettes over tobacco cigarette smoking.

Other tobacco companies have already began marketing electronic cigarettes, so we’re in no doubt that Altria is making the move in order to stay competitive and develop a foothold in our emerging industry. Lorillard Inc. now owns Blu Cigs, and has managed to keep sales strong by diversifying products to include tobacco free alternatives.

Given Altria’s size and financial weight, we can probably expect their offering to be a significant player in the market. Marlboro is already one of the most recognizable brands in the tobacco industry, so there is no doubt that their move into electronic cigarettes is another watershed moment for both industries.

On April 25, Altria’s chairman Marty Barrington said, “We are pleased to announce another step in our efforts to address the changing preferences of adult tobacco consumers.” Barrington went on to explain that they will release an e-cigarette through its ‘tobacco alternative’ subsidiary Nu Mark later in 2013.

Altria reported a noted decline in cigarette sales for the first quarter of 2013, with total sales falling by 5.2 percent. Marlboro brand in particular fell by 5.5 percent in the first quarter. Total revenue decreased by only 2 percent. They are pinning their hopes that the release of an electronic cigarette will bring an increase in sales later this year.

Given the success of competitors and the industry, rolling out a new electronic cigarette seems a no brainer. With the industry appearing to be blooming further in 2013, right across the world, the stakes seem to be rising by the day. We’re sure e-cig users and smokers alike will be interested to see what hand Altria’s, and indeed big tobacco, continues to play with their moves into our industry.

The new V2 line will include disposable electronic cigarettes, express kits, and cartomizers. All of these new products will be available at retail chains through the partnership with National Tobacco Company. The new disposable model has created a lot of anticipation as it is expected to be the best disposable e-cig yet. In focus group testing, the new V2 disposable ranked above all competitor brands. The new economical disposable will provide more superior vapor and battery performance, offering more than 400 puffs, lasting as long as 1.5 to 2 packs of tobacco cigarettes.

National Tobacco Company currently sells its products in more than 150,000 locations throughout the United States, but that is expected to grow by 30,000 more locations this year. This will be a huge step forward for V2 Cigs, which formerly relied heavily on Internet sales with products only available in a few select retail chains.

Over a million customers in the United States rely on V2 Cigs for their e-cig merchandise and the new partnership with NTC will be a huge benefit for existing customers and new customers alike. Consumers will no longer have to place orders online and wait for their shipments to arrive. Instead, they can visit one of the thousands of retail locations and buy the products they need right in their communities.

V2 Cigs plans to unveil a new store locator feature on their website in the near future. This will allow customers to find the nearest retail location where they can buy their favorite V2 products. With a growing consumer reach, V2 will also launch a new marketing campaign with plans to begin television and radio advertising. They will also offer product testing and coupons at various promotional events. Coupons for V2 products will be available through newspaper inserts, direct mailings, and the Internet.

V2 Cigs has already dominated the electronic cigarette industry online, but with the new partnership with National Tobacco Company, they are expected to continue growing with rapid expansion thanks to the new products, new advertising plans, and thousands of new retail locations.

There are several reasons that have been brought up in speculation. First, the FDA ran a massive ad campaign through the national media to push for smokers to quit the habit once and for all. Could this advertising push have been so effective that it caused such a high number of smokers to put down their cigarettes? Considering how many other widespread campaigns they have used in the past, it’s probably not likely that a single new advertising push is to blame for the major decline in tobacco sales.

Some say the ad campaign couldn’t have been that successful so quickly, but perhaps the decline could be attributed to more smoke-free workplaces and new policies that began in early 2013. Others blame the decline on increased taxes on tobacco. But what is the real reason for a 4.5 percent decrease in cigarette sales in the first quarter?

The Morgan Stanley research team said that none of the above reasons was the main contributing factor. Instead, they blamed the decline of tobacco cigarette sales on the massive growth of electronic cigarettes.

Interestingly, this huge health accomplishment among American smokers has not been celebrated publicly. Because the FDA isn’t behind the vast success, they seem to be quietly ignoring the situation. It seems almost ironic that the electronic cigarettes that the FDA worked so hard to ban are the one successful alternative that many smokers have chosen as a way to stop using tobacco.

Despite the naysayers that have repeatedly opposed electronic cigarettes, the proof is coming forward each day as more smokers put away their old tobacco cigarettes and pick up e-cigs.

In the past decade, many critics feared that electronic cigarettes would simply increase nicotine use rather than causing a decline in overall tobacco consumption. However, this new study proved that e-cigarettes are actually a good choice for many smokers.

The University of East London conducted a study with 1,123 people who were former smokers and 218 people who were current smokers. They participants came from around the world, including 33 different countries. Men and women participated with 70 percent being men and 77 percent coming from Europe while 16 percent were from the United States.

The results of the study were staggering. Ultimately, 86 percent of those who started using electronic cigarettes no longer used tobacco cigarettes at all. Six percent of participants still used tobacco cigarettes but relied on electronic cigarettes is social settings where tobacco smoke was prohibited.

Researchers also reported astounding health benefits among the participants. University of East London researcher Lynn Dawkins stated, “We know that the majority of people reported great health benefits – a reduction in coughing and improved breathing, for example.”

This study proves to critics that electronic cigarettes are indeed a good choice to help tobacco users kick the habit. While electronic cigarettes are still relatively new and much is still unknown, we can now be sure that 9 out of 10 smokers will successfully be able to stop using tobacco when they rely on electronic cigarettes as an alternative.

A lot of people thought e-cigs would be a short-lived fad and would slowly fizzle out, yet each year more and more smokers are switching to electronic cigarettes. You can now find countless success stories across the internet from smokers who have either partially or completely switched from analogs to e-cigs. So, have you tried one yet? If avoiding the harm from cigarette smoke is one of your New Year’s resolutions, you won’t find a better alternative than electronic cigarettes.

Let’s look at just a few of the many advantages electronic cigarettes have over analogs:

1. Inhale water vapor rather than smoke – When you take a puff from your e-cig, you inhale vapor created from water, nicotine, flavoring and propylene glycol (or vegetable glycerin). You don’t inhale the smoke, poisons, tar or carcinogens found in analogs.

If you’ve tried an e-cig and liked it, or feel confident that they are a better option than smoking, you’re probably in the market for a starter kit. Finding the right kit can be a daunting task with so many options out there. In hopes of making the search a little easier, we recommend the following:

1. Buy a kit with at least two batteries – This way you can have a charged battery at all times. I suggest three batteries at a minimum because eventually one of the batteries will die permanently.
2. Plan ahead and organize – Running out of cartridges or losing your charger or batteries is a sure-fire way to wind up back with analog cigarettes. If you smoke a pack a day, plan to use about one cartridge per day. Cartridges and e-liquid have a pretty long shelf-life so it’s ok to over-order until you figure out a routine.
3. Order cartridge variety packs – Most e-cig companies sell variety packs of their cartridges. While you might never think vanilla would be a flavor you’d want, it very well could become your favorite. I have discovered many amazing flavors that I would have never tried if they weren’t included in a sampler.
4. Avoid small and unprofessional brands – We have watched hundreds of e-cig companies come and go. Unfortunately when one of these start-ups decides to close shop, their loyal customers are stuck without warranties or customer service and have to resume the search for a new brand. 5. Minimum nicotine level = 12mg – If you are addicted in any way to nicotine, we urge you to order cartridges with a nicotine level of at least 12mg. Most leading brands aren’t getting into the e-liquid market. They’ve either settled with what they’re used to – selling starter kits and prefilled cartridges, or they fear impacting their profits. This Thanksgiving, the CocktailNerd team will be running a mini-series of blog posts that will hopefully help our visitors prepare and successfully make the switch to electronic cigarettes. Our first area of focus is the advantages and disadvantages of e-cigs over analog cigs in an effort to help you decide if e-cigs are a viable option for you.

Advantages

• Health: While the long-term effects of e-cigs on a person’s health are still being studied, the general consensus is that many of the side-effects of smoking cigarettes can be avoided with e-cigs. They do not contain the thousands of poisons, carcinogens or tar that are found in analog cigarettes. E-cigs are made from four basic ingredients; water, propylene glycol (or vegetable glycerin), nicotine and flavoring.
• Money: Most companies claim that each cartridge they sell is equivalent to a full pack of cigarettes. This claim is widely disputed and the actual usage from one cartridge can vary heavily between different brands. However, most people agree that cartridges commonly last between a half-pack and a full pack of analog cigarettes. The average price of one cartridge is around $2.50 so regardless of how much use you get out of one, the money you can save is very obvious.
• Freshness: Electronic cigarettes emit little-to-no odor. This is a big advantage because your clothes, house and breath will no longer smell like a used ashtray.
• Senses: Most smokers notice that after long-term use of analog cigarettes, their sense of smell and taste diminish. When switching to e-cigs, these senses begin to recover. Get ready for the full awesomeness of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner!
• Social Standards: Anti-smoking groups have done an excellent job of making smokers social outcasts. With e-cigs, many people feel that their habit is more accepted and even appreciated. It also can be a great conversation starter.
• Smoking Indoors: Our team is based in the Upper-Midwest and it’s getting pretty cold out there! I personally used to loathe the coming of winter because I knew I’d have to sit out in the freezing cold just to have a cigarette. I can now avoid the cold and stay toasty inside while using my e-cig in my home and most public buildings.
• Flavors: Eventually e-cig users find a favorite flavor of e-liquid and use it regularly. However, there are literally thousands of flavors available in the marketplace and the option to change it up is great.
• Different Nicotine Levels: The FDA has not yet approved electronic cigarettes as a smoking-cessation device, so it’s against the law for e-cig companies and promoters to make claims of using them to quit smoking. Keep in mind, though, that the amount of nicotine inside of a cartridge varies from 24mg+ down to 0mg (nicotine-free). This gives you the ability to step down the amount of nicotine you’re consuming if you’d like to.

Disadvantages

• Complexity: E-cigs are made up of different parts and require re-charging. This means you must be organized and plan ahead to successfully use electronic cigarettes. When I first started using e-cigs, I would lose cartridges, not order enough, or forget to charge my spare batteries. Any of these can quickly result in turning back to analog cigarettes.
• Nicotine Absorption: It takes longer for the nicotine in e-cig vapor to be absorbed into your system than cigarette smoke. For me, this is only an issue in the morning as e-cigs don’t give me the immediate satisfaction that analog cigarettes do. However, most people get used to this quickly and it doesn’t bother them for long.
• Taste: No e-liquid manufacturers have been able to mimic the taste of burning tobacco exactly. Some have come very close (such as Halo Cigs) but because e-cigs don’t burn, it will never be truly the same. This is a common complaint from new e-cig users, but they typically learn to prefer the taste of their e-cigs over analogs. Also, after extended use of e-cigs, analog cigarettes lose their appeal and actually taste dirty and gross!

While we recommend electronic cigarettes to absolutely everyone who smokes, sometimes people just prefer the simplicity of analog cigarettes. If you’ve weighed the pro’s and con’s and want to try out e-cigs, stay tuned for our next post in this series – Choosing the Perfect Kit.

E-cig Type: This shows the type of e-cigs included in a certain kit. The row will show two e-cigarette build types:

• Cartomizer: This is the currently popular 2-piece design electronic cigarette that the majority of brands will offer. The e-cig’s two separate pieces are the battery, the section that occupies where the tobacco and rolling paper would be found on a traditional cigarette, and the cartomizer, which replaces the traditional filter. In cartomizers the cartridge, which holds the liquid nicotine, has a built-in atomizer (hence the portmanteau ‘cartomizer’!). The atomizer is the heating element which vaporizes the liquid nicotine into water vapor for you to inhale while using the e-cigarette. This process is of course all powered by the aforementioned battery.



• 3 Piece design: In this design the cartridge and atomizer are separate pieces. This was the type of model favored in the early days of e-cigarettes. Although some claim that a dedicated atomizer performs better than a disposable element found in Cartomizers, they will also need to be cleaned and replaced regularly too. If they aren’t, this often leads to a poor and inconsistent performance from your e-cig. When reaching the end of its life, your smoking experience will deteriorate quickly.

Individual single cartridges have an advantage that they can be self-refilled if you chose to buy liquid nicotine or e-liquid. However this can be a messy, laborious process and liquid nicotine can be dangerous in large quantities. Also because single cartridge units are often not sealed, accidental over filling and poor quality units will cause undesirable leaks. Cotton webbing is usually used inside a cartridge to help draw out the liquid will need to be replaced along with the cartridge shells themselves over time. This again leaves your unit open to consistency issues not experienced with cartomizers.

Switch Types: These are the battery switch types available with or without as an option in a certain kits. The switch in an electronic cigarette battery is the device that tells the atomizer to start vaporizing the liquid nicotine from the cartridge so it is ready to be inhaled. Auto switches operate when a user sucks/draws on the end of the unit like a normal cigarette.

A Manual switch operates by a small button depressed on the bottom half of the battery. Manual switch batteries are not as common as they used to be. Early auto switches suffered with a slight lag and also with over-sensitivity issues, which often resulted in the unit turning on and off in a user’s pocket or bag. Modern automatic switch batteries no longer suffer with these issues and are now the most common e-cig switch type available. Some more experienced Vapers prefer manual switches as it allows them to draw as much vapor as they want since there is no cut-off safety feature like you would get with the automatic batteries. We do recommend that new users stick to the automatic switch batteries because they will turn off the battery when the maximum recommend amount of nicotine is dispensed for each puff. Most users will never notice the cut off because they won’t reach that point, but if you are a heavy smoker, the manual battery may be a better fit for you. Many new manual switch batteries are also coming with a lock feature (Usually pushing the button 3 times fast to turn it on and off) to prevent it from turning on when not intended to the consumer.

Batteries Sizes: These are the battery sizes available or included with a kit. We’ve categorized them into 4 different sizes for the purposes of the comparison table, based on the size they will make an e-cigarette when a cartridge is attached:

• Standard: Comparable to the size of a normal king size tobacco cigarette.
• Mini: Smaller than a standard sized cigarette.
• Long: Long version but still comparable to 100s sized cigarette.
• Vaporizer: Too large to be compared to a normal cigarette. This category covers a wide range of devices including the tank devices you’ll see from more specialized e-cigarette suppliers.

Battery size is often a compromise between weight and convenience. Larger devices will tend to be longer lasting between recharges; however will often be heavier, which can make the e-smoking experience less natural.

When I tested and reviewed my first V2 Cigs Ultimate starter kit I was impressed, but I also saw room for improvement. I enjoyed the flavors but the options were limited to Cowboy, Congress, Menthol, Coffee, Vanilla and Cherry. My favorite at the time was Congress but hoped to see more options available. V2 now offers 10 standard flavors – Red, Sahara, Congress, Menthol, Peppermint, Mint Tea, Cherry, Chocolate, Coffee and Vanilla. They also have three Limited Edition flavors – Grape, Cola and Classic Menthol. V2 Red quickly became my favorite flavor and it is my daily choice. Taking it further, V2 also offers limited flavors for their customers to try out. For those of you with very particular tastes, V2 even lets you design your own custom cartridges and flavors. We haven’t had the chance to order any custom flavors, but hope to soon – if any of our readers have, we’d love to hear your thoughts below.

Another way V2 Cigs has shown their dedication to innovation is by increasing the power of their e-cigs. My first V2 electronic cigarette felt a little too weak and I would have to take a long drag to get enough vapor and a strong throat hit. Their new 4.2V batteries power the atomizer much faster and it feels very similar to the drags I would take from a regular analog cigarette. I own and have used every product V2 Cigs sells, and I have never had a faulty product. Receiving a dead battery or atomizer is a surefire way to lose interest in e-cigs. The kit included a standard SuperMax battery, an extra-capacity SuperMax battery, a wall charger, 5 large cartridges/atomizers, an owner’s manual, and a membership card. The deluxe kit comes with a two-piece e-cig design, but they also offer the older three-piece design in the premium kit if that is your preference.

I thought the South Beach Smoke membership card was a neat little touch. It’s pretty handy to keep in my wallet in case anyone gives me hassle about vaping in public. As with any other electronic cigarette, you can use South Beach Smoke pretty much anywhere and it’s legal.

South Beach Smoke had a lot of good flavors. I really liked the Peppermint Flavor. It had a sweet aftertaste that was awesome. Cartridge flavors are available in Tobacco Classic, Tobacco Blue, Tobacco Gold, Menthol, Chocolate, Vanilla, Cherry, Peppermint, Pina Colada, and Peach. You can get a variety pack if you want to try a few flavors.

The South Beach Smoke e-cig gave me pretty decent vapor, but it seemed like I had to take a harder drag to get as much as I wanted. Once I got used to it, I really liked the throat hit. I also noticed that the tobacco flavors seem to have a better vapor volume than the others.

In early 2013, South Beach Smoke updated their operations and now supply 100% American-made e-liquid in their cartridges. Juice made in the US is known to have better ingredients and quality control standards. They also taste much better than e-liquids made in other countries in most cases. We haven’t had a chance to try out the new cartridges yet but we hope to soon and will provide our thoughts. Additionally, South Beach now offers their cartridges in 24mg nicotine strength.

South Beach Smoke has three different deluxe starter kits to choose from. There are also a few Premium kits if you are looking for the three-piece designs. Here are the options if you want the deluxe kit (which I recommend!).

The thing that I least liked about the White Cloud e-cig was the price. To me, $239.95 seems ridiculously high. When I commented on this to someone I know, they pointed out that one of the reasons the starter kit is so expensive is to make up for the low price of the cartridges, and I guess I understand this reasoning. Still, even understanding the logic behind the pricing did not ease the hurt of shelling out nearly $200 for a starter kit.

Since purchasing my first White Cloud starter kit, the company has introduced new models and nearly all of the prices on their site have been reduced tremendously. The Cirrus II which once cost $239.95 now only costs $49.95. This is very exciting because now everyone should be able to try out these great ecigs.

When it comes to creating a dense cloud of vapor that is full of flavor, White Cloud certainly knows what it is doing. I couldn’t believe how impressive the vapor was. The great thing about the vapor is that the flavored cartridges actually tasted just the way they were supposed to. I was so impressed about the quality of the flavor, that I almost forgot to be irritated about the outrageous price of the starter kit.

I am in love with the two part design that the White Cloud company decided to go with. Not  only are the pieces easy to connect, but I can’t help thinking that the replacement cartridge seemed much more sanitary than the refillable cartridges which meant using the same mouthpiece over and over again.

I am happy enough with my White Smoke electronic cigarettes, that I have urged all of my friends and family members to try them out.
