Former “Winston Man” Denounces Tobacco and Praises E-Cigs Former “Winston Man” Denounces Tobacco and Praises E-Cigs

From 1982 to 1988, David Goerlitz was known by the world as the “Winston Man”. His face became the trademark image for Winston cigarettes and he was frequently seen puffing on a cigarette as he encouraged people to try his favorite brand. He appeared on 42 billboard advertisements, topping the total of his rival, the Marlboro Man. Then in 1988, everything changed when he publicly denounced the whole tobacco industry and switched sides to join the anti-tobacco movement. What made Goerlitz have such a sudden change of heart? “This subject hits very close to home for me; my brother was still a young man when he lost his life due to his cigarette addiction,” he explained. Now the former 80’s Winston man is becoming a champion for a new cause – electronic cigarettes.

After years of dealing with both sides of the tobacco movement, Goerlitz was intrigued when he first heard about electronic cigarettes so he started to do some research. Soon, he discovered that these devices could truly be the answer for smokers around the world that wanted to quit, but just couldn’t manage to kick the habit. “Most smokers wish they’d never started and would quit if they could,” he said. “E-cigarettes are not for children or for anyone who doesn’t already smoke. But for the 42.1 million adult smokers who’ve been unable to quit, they are a safer alternative – safer for them and for those around them.”

Goerlitz soon realized that ecigs were getting a lot of bad press and it was mostly due to myths and the abundance of inaccurate information. So he decided to set the record straight by addressing the most common myths and giving people the truth that he discovered during his own research on the ecig industry. The first major misconception that Goerlitz noticed was the idea that ecigs are just as bad as tobacco cigarettes and some people thought they could be even worse.

“No, I wouldn’t say just anyone should use them – or use just any brand without carefully looking at what’s in the e-juice and where it comes from,” he responded. “But most smokers would quit if they could, and for them, this can be a healthier option.” He went on to point out that there is plenty of scientific evidence to prove that ecigs help some smokers quit. He encouraged smokers to do their own research and read each brand’s ingredients carefully before selecting an ecig that could safely and effectively help them quit.

Goerlitz told reporters that he has chosen to work with American Heritage, an ecig company that uses ingredients that are sourced and mixed in the United States. “Quitting smoking is hard, and there are millions of smokers in the U.S. alone whereby nicotine patches, cocktail straws, and hypnosis simply doesn’t work,” he said. “I’ve joined American Heritage as their spokesperson because, in part, they’ve made it truly easy for traditional smokers by providing the most authentic e-cigarette on the market today. In my opinion, the more people that switch, the more lives that are saved.”

It’s a major victory for vaping when the former Winston Man comes forward to embrace ecigs as a life saving alternative for people addicted to cigarettes. Are you surprised to see David Goerlitz as the newest ecig spokesman?

Katie actually had a negative first experience of electronic cigarettes, picking up a cheap and horrible model from my local mall. Thanks to a chance meeting with co-editor David, she hasn’t had a tobacco cigarette in over 5 years. She brings a strong female voice to the e-cig community.
