Switching To Vaping May Benefit COPD Patients, Study Finds Switching To Vaping May Benefit COPD Patients, Study Finds

Vaping devices may help improve symptoms in patients suffering from the chronic condition.

Research continues to emerge that proves vaping is one of the single greatest tools for smoking cessation that we have at our disposal. While some anti-vaping activists may attempt to argue against it, it’s hard to contest the growing body of evidence in favor of vapor.

A follow-up study to groundbreaking research from the University of Catania found that most COPD patients who took up vaping significantly improved their health by several markers. The study had found that vaping is an exceptional tool in helping patients quit or reduce their smoking habit.

The vaping community has praised the work as one in a growing body of research proving vaping’s efficacy in helping people to quit smoking. Anti-vaping advocates, however, continue to champion for stricter regulations on vaping despite this research highlighting vaping as a valuable public health asset.

Studies such as this are helping to level a very uneven playing field for the vaping industry. This kind of research is paramount in the public health campaign to help end the smoking epidemic once and for all.

Hope For The Suffering

A study titled “Health effects in COPD smokers who switch to electronic cigarettes: a retrospective-prospective 3-year follow-up” was published by the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The study had found notable improvement in overall symptoms in patients who had taken up vaping and reduced or quit smoking altogether.

The three-year study of COPD patients looked at those trying to use vaping to help quit, as well as smokers as a control. The study concluded patients who used vaping to help them reduce or quit smoking improved COPD exacerbation rates, as well as better CAT and 6MWD scores.

Researchers tracked changes from the baseline period within each group and then compared the trajectory of symptom progression over time. They also evaluated differences between each of the groups, including people vaping and smoking at the same time, known as dual-users.

In the end, COPD patients who had entirely switched to vaping had better outcomes in comparison to smokers. This research highlights another incredible benefit of vaping for those who are smoking and looking to quit smoking.

The Benefits Of Vaping

The study adds to a growing list of research highlighting the benefits of vaping for those looking to reduce or quit smoking. In particular, the study reinforces previous research from outlets such as the NHIS, that found COPD patients noted improved respiratory symptoms after switching from tobacco products to vapor products.

In a watershed study published in the Journal of Aerosol Sciences, researchers found that vapers have a 57,000 times lower risk of cancer in comparison to smokers. The study concluded the particulate matter in vapor is far less harmful than particulate matter in smoke.

A landmark study conducted by Public Health England found vaping to be 95% safer than smoking. Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has shown the toxicants in vapor are 93% lower than cigarette smoke.

In an age where there are large amounts of fake news being propagated by media outlets touting the so-called “dangers” of vaping, it’s no wonder the public has a misinformed view of the potential risks and benefits of vaping. Researchers from King’s College London found that only 13% of adults surveyed believed vaping to be safer than smoking, with a staggering 26% believing they may be just as bad, if not worse.

As this article highlights, research is continually emerging showcasing vaping’s efficacy as a smoking cessation aid. In fact, research conducted by the University of Louisville found vaping to be the single most effective tool to help the public to quit smoking, even beating out prescription options.

Implications

Studies like this are invaluable in helping to create a balanced narrative in the public discourse surrounding vaping. This research comes at a time where anti-vaping activists and politicians are passing legislation carte blanche to appease reactionary parents and other constituents.

This kind of research helps give hope to those suffering from chronic conditions and looking to alleviate some of their symptoms. They help showcase the value to smokers in taking up vaping to help them quit.

There is an ever-growing body of work highlighting the value of vaping as a smoking cessation aid. These studies are paramount in helping inform people about the potential benefits vaping can offer them as well as their loved ones, especially those suffering from chronic conditions such as COPD.

In an age of fake news, flagrant misinformation, and outright lies being perpetuated by the western media propaganda machine; members of the vaping community need to remain vigilant in countering these false narratives and untruths. We should all be wholly informed about the potential benefits of vaping over smoking to help balance this highly-skewed narrative.
