At first glance, it seemed like an innocent dinner among friends or colleagues. The group gathered at the Chez Francoise restaurant in Paris last Wednesday, where they sipped top-notch Bourgougne wine and dined on frog legs and veal. The group ended their meal with Cuban cigars according to French weekly Le Journal de Dimanche. While it might have seemed like a nice celebratory luncheon, many are concerned about the timing of the meal considering the guests that attended. Just one week after Health Minister Marisol Touraine announced a new...read more
In the past, Europe was a haven for smokers and the tobacco industry experienced steady growth. In a July 2012 report, Moody’s Investors Service predicted sustained robust profits for tobacco companies in Europe, but this summer’s report looks much different. This morning, Moody’s released a new 2013 report stating that growth of the European tobacco industry is now slowing, though it remains stable. Today’s report stated that the European tobacco industry’s growth status has been downgraded from positive to stable. According to...read more
Electronic cigarettes are wildly popular across Europe with an estimated 1.3 million users in the UK alone. In the past, e-cigs have faced no government regulations or restrictions in Britain, but that is all about to change. On Wednesday, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that e-cigs would be classified and regulated as nonprescription medications starting in 2016. The MHRA is taking steps to regulate e-cigarettes in order to be sure that users can continue to safely enjoy these products. Officials have noted...read more
In the race to become the most popular e-cig, NJOY is a serious competitor. In the past few months, we’ve seen NJOY backed by celebrities like Courtney Love and Bruno Mars. Now, two new investors have stepped forward to provide the e-cig maker with $75 million for research and expansion. New investors Sean Parker and Douglas Teitelbaum believe in the future of e-cigarettes and they have made a serious financial investment to prove it. Sean Parker is no rookie when it comes to investing in new technology. Best known for his role as...read more
With Father’s day just around the corner, finding an original and useful gift can be a headache for even the most discerning gift buying children amongst us. Our well-meaning and thoughtful purchases often result in us playing things safe year after year where our Dads are concerned. Sure we want to buy them something interesting, but like most fathers, it has to be extremely functional and practical too! Until recently my dad received his annual gift of a shaving kit, or perhaps the latest designer cologne, every June without fail. My...read more
Pets provide a lot of happiness for their owners and are often considered a part of the family. People go to great lengths in order to keep these beloved companions safe and healthy. In fact, American Pet Products Association forecasts that pet owners in the United States will spend $55.53 billion on their pets in 2013. Today, pet owners can purchase a wide variety of medications and health supplements for their furry friends. Unfortunately, there is one major risk that is often overlooked. Cats and dogs that are exposed to cigarette smoke are...read more
For smokers, a hot cup of coffee and a cigarette seem to be a match made in heaven, but if you prefer your coffee from Starbucks, you will have to take a walk before you can enjoy a cigarette. As of June 1, Starbucks has banned smoking within 25 feet of entrances in U.S. and Canada stores. Starbucks has always banned smoking inside and on their patios, but they never bothered smokers as long as they were outside of these areas. Now smokers will have to move farther away to light up thanks to the brand new ban. Some reports suggest that...read more
According to a May 31 report from Reuters, France is now issuing a ban against electronic cigarettes in all public venues. While France used to be a place where seemingly everyone smoked, now cigarettes have become a public enemy for Health Minister Marisol Touraine. In 2007, France banned the use of tobacco cigarettes in public and now six years later, they are enforcing the same restrictions for tobacco-free electronic cigarettes. After the 2007 ban on cigarettes, many smokers in France began to use electronic cigarettes as a lawful...read more
A brand new study released in Inhalation Toxicology concluded that using electronic cigarettes does not harm lung function. The Greece-based study compared the impact of first and second-hand smoke and e-cig vapor on lung function. Researchers worked with fifteen tobacco smokers and fifteen nonsmokers. The smoker group was comprised of both men and women and all of the participants smoked a minimum of fifteen cigarettes each day. The nonsmoker group was comprised of men and women who had never smoked. The fifteen smokers were studied after...read more
For years, the FDA has battled against the electronic cigarette industry, pushing for new regulations and stricter supervision over manufacturing processes. Now, we face a future where the FDA will inevitably rule on how e-cigs will be regulated and the tobacco industry stands at risk of suffering big losses depending on the outcome. The tobacco industry is currently worth more than $35 billion per year. While it is a booming industry with millions of smokers worldwide, it is also one of the most dangerous industries to public health....read more
