Guide to Vaporizer Pens
The Basics of Vape Pens
Vape Pens have proven themselves to be the favorite choice for anyone wanting a discreet on-the-go vaporizing solution. These slick pens are more compact than devices such as box mods by packing the atomizer, tank (or chamber), and the power source into a single slimline form. These devices tend to be powered by internal rechargeable batteries although some modern pens use externally charged and disposable batteries as well.
These vaporizers earned their namesake from their resemblance to the ordinary pen. While these vaporizers tend to be more straightforward than more advanced box mods, vape pens don’t cut any corners or make any compromises on functionality or performance. Vape pens can come in a variety of forms and are often optimized to work with popular mediums such as e-liquids, dry-herbs, or concentrates. Modern pens continuously push the boundaries of innovation by increasing efficiency and incorporating unique functionality without sacrificing the slimline form that earned them their spot as the preferred discreet option among many enthusiasts.
We understand that there’s plenty to consider when in the market for a new vaporizer and we hope we can help ease some of that burden and deliver a little peace of mind during your search. In the following guide, we’re going to break down differences in functionality as well as how to distinguish between them. We’ve already done a brief overview of vape pens, and how their discreet portability has earned them a certain fondness among enthusiasts in the vaping community. Now we’ll go over the basics a little more in depth.
Introduction To The Vape Pen Guide
We’re going to start this guide with an overview of batteries and all the proper safety precautions you need to know. After that, we’re going to go through and break down each component of a pen, from the mouthpiece to the charging port. Finally, we’re going to go over the various types of pens to help guide you to the one that’s perfect for you. These vaporizers tend to be optimized for e-liquid, dry-herb and concentrates. Their versatility and portability have made them the preferred discrete choice among enthusiasts in the vaping community.
What is mAh and why does it matter?
Batteries are measured by power consumed over time, known as mAh which stand for milliamp hours. This unit helps to indicate the charge your battery can hold and how long before it will need to be charged again. Batteries in vape pens are usually rated between 650-2200 mAh, although this varies between devices and manufacturers. Although it’s safe to assume the higher the mAh, the longer the battery should hold a charge, that doesn’t mean that you should just seek out the most massive possible mAh rating you can find. There are some simple rules to follow so you can ensure the safety of yourself and anyone you may share your pen with.
It’s essential you have a fundamental understanding of Ohm’s Law, which is just Amps = Voltage/Resistance. To put it simply, you must make sure your atomizer isn’t drawing more amperage than the battery can deliver. If you overdraw the battery by exceeding the amperage, it may cause leakage or even potential explosions. While it may seem a little confusing to users who haven’t taken an electronics course, it’s really easy to understand. Just divide the voltage level by the coil resistance (ohms) and then compare with the discharge rate (amps) of the battery. You can do it with a basic calculator or even on some paper, no special formulas or calculators required.
Connections on vape Pens
Another fundamental of vape pens are the different kinds of thread connectors used in batteries and cartridges.
The most common connection is known as the 510 thread, and as such, they offer some of the most significant versatility regarding accessories. Another term you may come across in your searching are “eGo” batteries. eGo batteries can safely connect to both eGo and 510 threaded devices, only adding to their versatility.
This thanks to the fact that the inside of an eGo connector is simply a 510 thread, while its outside is the eGo thread. You’re even able to connect 510 threading to eGo devices through optional adapters, although you’ll see this more often in box mods rather than vape pens. It’s also critical to note, so make sure it can handle the eGo’s clearomizer before attempting this.
Other varieties of threading include 808, 601, and 710. While traditional 808 threading was seen as more straightforward than 510 threading back in the early days, both connections have advanced tremendously and have gone in entirely different directions over time. Modern 808 threaded devices have placed more emphasis on producing a smooth cigarette-like airflow, while 510 threaded devices have been optimized to for versatility and thus emerged a standard.
601 and 710 are other types of threading, although they’re used pretty much exclusively by the manufacturer Atomos for use in their devices. While there is a sizable chunk of the vaping community that stands behind Atmos and their products, do note that this option in threading will yield you the fewest alternatives, as you’ll be virtually locked into the Atmos ecosystem. While 808 threading offers a couple of advantages over the common 510 threading, such as greater durability and being less prone to leakage, you really can’t beat the versatility and performance offered by 510.
Unless you’re a connoisseur or an enthusiast who is very serious about their airflow, going with a less common alternative threading is going to limit your options for various vaporizers and accessories drastically. 510 threading is the premier choice regarding support for a wide array of devices and attachments. Simply put, 510 threading makes a much better investment in the long-term.
Anatomy of a Vape Pen
- Battery – The power source of your device, it provides power to heat the atomizer coils which convert e-liquids, dry-herbs, or concentrates into an aerosolized vapor.
- Atomizer – The atomizer houses the coils, when the device is engaged it heats the coils to create a vapor from your material.
- Coil – The coil is a piece of coiled wire functioning as a heating element directly used to vaporize e-liquid or concentrates. The coil is usually housed in the atomizer alongside the wicking material to help prevent any potential leakage.
- Wick – The wick is a material inside the atomizer which holds your e-liquid or oil concentrates for vaporizing. Priming your material on the wick before heating helps dramatically improve vaporizing efficiency.
- Power Button – Commonly known as the “fire button,” this is the primary way to engage the device to heat the atomizer to produce vapor. Devices can be turned on and off through this button, and some devices even use it to adjust the temperature through a series of clicks.
- Mouthpiece – As the name might suggest, this is just the piece where you place your mouth to draw. These are commonly referred to as drip-tips regardless if they meet the technical definition or not.
- Fill Port – If your pen isn’t technically a drip-tip, it will very likely feature a fill port. That is a small port on the device where you can insert e-liquid directly into the tank as opposed to having to disassemble the entire tank to refill.
- Charging Port – Most pens commonly feature micro USB charging due to its slimport design and massive prevalence, although there are devices that feature proprietary connections. There are an array of modern pens that have implemented pass-through charging allowing the use of your pen even as it’s plugged in.
- Airflow Control – Some pens feature an AFC ring or AirFlow Control ring. This basic ring can be rotated to allow fine adjustment over the amount of airflow in each draw, making them as strong or smooth as you desire.
- Threading – As we’ve previously covered, threading connects the batteries to the rest of the device. The industry standards are 510 and eGo threading, while 808, 601, and 710 are significantly less common.
Types of Vape Pens
Vape Pens for E-Liquids
The most common variety of vape pen focus on e-liquids. These pens are essentially an evolution of the more traditional “cig-a-like” and “e-cigarette” style of vaporizers while offering greater performance and functionality. All of this while still managing to retain a comparably sized form. As such there are still plenty in the vaping community who opt for vape pens over box mods for e-liquid vaping.
Vape Pens For Dry Herb
Some of the earliest vaporizers were designed exclusively for use with dry-herbs. While many of those devices were quite crude, often combusting your material rather than vaporizing it, dry-herb vaporizers have come a long way in functionality. You’re now able to get similar performance to older high-end vaporizers out of the modern vape pen. Many cannabis enthusiasts remark how the high tends to feel more potent when vaping as opposed to smoking.
Vape Pens for Concentrates
Concentrate pens come in two distinct varieties, wax and oil pens. Oil pens are similar to traditional e-liquid pens, featuring the same wick and coil system you would find in any e-liquid vaporizer. Wax pens (also called dab pens) operate a bit different; instead of the wick and coil system, concentrates are placed in a ceramic bowl which holds the coil that vaporizes the concentrate. Cannabis concentrates have quickly emerged as a popular choice for our recreation enthusiasts out there, and may arguably be growing more popular than dry-herbs as they gain prevalence. Concentrate pens are also gaining popularity due to the lack of smell produced from the vapor, making discreet on-the-go vaping even easier.
Multi-Function Vape Pens
The most recent innovation in vape pens has been the emergence of multifunction vaporizers, compatible with two or more of the substances listed above. Manufacturers have even begun creating cartridges specialized for whichever material you’re using that can be switched out at will. The Pro Series 3 by V2 is an excellent example of this, being compatible with all three materials through the use of swappable magnetic cartridges. The most common multifunction vaporizers are 2-in-1 devices compatible with both dry herbs and concentrates, although 3-in-1 vaporizers that support e-liquid as well are growing in popularity. As the technology has improved, it’s allowed these versatile portable devices to have the same performance and battery life previously only available in high-end specialty devices.
Choosing the right Vape Pen for you
Is battery life important?
Battery life is one of the most important factors to consider in the search for the perfect vape pen. As no pen is ideal for all, it’s essential to be in tune with what your needs are. You may need to make some compromises between portability and battery life as the smaller a pen, the shorter the battery tends to be. Alternatively, if you’re out and about frequently and may not have many opportunities to charge your device, you may want to opt for a larger capacity battery. But even in that case, an investment in a decent power-bank would mitigate this issue. The majority of vape pens use micro USB ports for charging, although some use proprietary connections so be sure to confirm what your pen has before making a final purchase.
What mediums will you use? (wax /dry herb/ oils)
Another critical thing to consider when purchasing a vape pen is what you’re going to be using it with most often. Since some devices specialize in either e-liquid, dry-herbs, or concentrates, it’s worthwhile to ask. Even many multi-functional devices are more efficiently optimized for a particular medium, so be sure to take time to research and read reviews so you can see what the pen you’re interested does best. It can be a bit overwhelming if you dive in without any direction, as there are tons of options. If you’re new to vaping and aren’t sure what material you’re going to be using the most, it’s probably best to opt for a versatile multifunction device such as the V2 Pro Series 7. That allows you to enjoy a consistent vaping experience across a variety of mediums while you figure out what you prefer the most.
What Charging method do you want?
You need to note that not all pens feature micro USB charging ports, with some vaporizers featuring proprietary connections. That means if anything were to happen to the charging cable you would need to buy a specialty replacement cable directly from the manufacturer as opposed to picking up a ubiquitous micro USB cable from any convenience store. Make sure you confirm the type of connection the pen you’re looking at has before committing to a final purchase.
Capacity of chambers
When deciding on chamber capacity, it’s important to ask yourself how often you’re going to be using the pen. If you’re a part-time enthusiast who’s only going to use the pen at home sparingly, you can opt for a smaller chamber for your smaller sessions. However, if you’re a power-user enthusiast or love to share with friends, you’ll probably want a more substantial chamber to sustain these grander sessions. Generally speaking, a larger chamber means a bigger device, so make sure the pen is still portable enough to suit your needs.
Another vital factor to consider in the search for your perfect pen is the tradeoff between price and functionality. Of course, as with most things in life, you end up getting what you pay for. There’s frequently a direct correlation between price and quality of the device, with well-built, high-end pens costing more than bargain ones. Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some remarkable low-cost vape pens out there; it’s just low-cost devices tend to be made out of cheaper materials and don’t offer as much distinct functionality as their higher-cost counterparts.
Does it have good reviews online?
Once you’ve narrowed down the search to a few lucky select pens, you’re going to want to do a bit of original research online. For many people, these reviews ultimately help drive the final decision when purchasing a vaporizer. Reviews can give you a better idea if a vaporizer is worth the asking price. Or bring up features or issues you may have not even considered.
When researching reviews online, be sure to take in a healthy blend of both professional and customer reviews. While professional reviews are often better written and can give you a solid overall picture of the vaporizer, these reviews can often be biased and lack the consumer perspective. A customer review can let you know how actual users are enjoying the device with everyday use, and let you know about issues professionally reviews may not cover. Anytime you’re purchasing something you’re going to use daily; it’s a good idea to have a solid understanding of the ins and outs.
There’s plenty to consider when navigating the massive sea of vaporizers in search of the perfect vape pen. That’s why the trained experts here at CocktailNerd have compiled the preceding comprehensive buyers guide to help make your journey a little more comfortable.
